Dunne helped Millwall secure their place in the quarter-finals of the tournament with a comfortable success over non-league Luton on Saturday, with Championship rivals Blackburn now standing in their way of a last-four berth at the home of English football.
The 30-year-old full-back was an unused substitute when the Lions were beaten 3-0 by Manchester United at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium after seeing his place in the side taken by former player-manager Dennis Wise at the last minute.
And while he bears no grudges against his old boss, the memories of that personal disappointment are driving Dunne on this season.
He told reporters: "I was in the starting line-up until two nights before the game. Wisey then came back from seeing a specialist in France on the Thursday and said he was going to play.
"I was heartbroken but he told me he was only going to last 50 minutes and then I would come on.
"So after half-time in the final I started warming up thinking I was going on. I ended up spending the whole half running up and down the touchline.
"When he decided to come off near the end he chose to send on Curtis Weston so that he could become the youngest player to appear in an FA Cup final.
"It was tough to take but I was only a young boy and looking back it was all part of growing up. I had a few words with Wisey afterwards but he was a friend as well as a manager and he looked after me, so there are no grudges. He put his arm around me and we had a good drink that night.
"It would be lovely to get into the semi-finals this season or even the final - and this time I'd love to be involved. That would make up for Cardiff."
