Spearing praise for Feeney

Bolton's players were "devastated" when Millwall recalled loanee Liam Feeney, according to Jay Spearing, who is hopeful his former team-mate will have an off day when he returns to the Reebok Stadium this Saturday.

Winger Feeney helped breathe new life into Dougie Freedman's struggling side earlier this term as part of a triumvirate of loan recruits which included full-back Kevin McNaughton and midfielder Neil Danns.

While the latter two remain at the Reebok Stadium, Feeney was recalled from his three-month stay with parent club Millwall at the end of October, much to the disappointment of Spearing and his team-mates.

The Lions visit Bolton, who are still looking for their first home win of the season, this weekend and the hosts know they will have to prepare for a man who helped kickstart their current six-match unbeaten run.

Speaking after being named Championship Player of the Year at the Northwest Football Awards, Spearing said: "He was a great lad, he did wonders for Bolton.

"The lads got on with him really well and we were all devastated that he left, sometimes that's what happens in football.

"If he plays Saturday we'll show him the respect but hopefully he won't be scoring any goals."

till reckon Chelsea will go for Khedira as back up for Matic. I think it will turn out to be quite a Mourihno-y window: We'll see the squad players and youth in action pre-season, say things like well, we need not buy anybody and then the club will bid £60m for Pogba and send everybody on loan.

would love to be a fly on the wall at the meeting between Milner and Rodgers. I don't know if flies can count, but if they can then I would be counting the number of times Rodgers used the word outstanding in his attempts to get Milner to sign.

Reds and Arsenal chase Milner

ell, it wouldn't be a summer without Arsenal fans fretting over losing a key player, and United throwing their weight around and muscling in on transfer deals which are (apparently) near to completion. If we can't be entertained by the football on the pitch, let's enjoy the silly off-pitch soap opera of the transfer season. Hurrah!
