How did you start with Sheffield United?
The family. I didn't have much of a choice really. We moved around quite a lot, but we were always Blades in our family. Because of that I was only able to get to my first game a couple of years ago, and because of the band I don't get to too many games. I saw us play Derby when we went 3-0 up, cruising, then they scored twice quickly and we were pretty damn nervous for the rest of the game. I also went to see us play Barnsley, and I can quite confidently say it was the worst game I've ever seen.
It looks like a totally different sport sometimes, doesn't it?
You wonder why every team can't play like Spain or Barca do. Just on the floor. Most of the football at our level just looks panicky - like they can't wait to get rid of the ball - just belting it in the air.
Sometimes not the best quality in the Championship, is it?
No. When you look at Barcelona or the World Cup...In a lot of the games I've seen, it looks like United are competing to see who can hit the ball the highest and longest, just aiming in the general direction of Darius Henderson. It's the easy way out. Having said that, I'd say we're better than England...
That's a bold statement...
Well they were embarrassing in the World Cup, weren't they? The only plan seemed to be get it to Frank Lampard or Steven Gerrard and muscle your way through. There should be a Plan B, not just a Plan A. They didn't seem to know what to do when things went wrong.
Do you think everyone really cares that much about England?
We do seem to be a more cynical lot these days. The poorness of the display (against Germany) was something to behold. People seem to get hung up on little things too much - we should've just moved on after the Lampard disallowed goal - even at 2-2, would we have won? The pub I was in, someone put 'Things Can Only Get Better', and everyone was singing. Just move on.
So what about United's prospects?
The coming season will be telling. Last season was a huge disappointment - it's such a tough division, but if we have a bad start, I think (Kevin) Blackwell will go. We have to aim for automatic promotion though. We have to toughen up our back line - for ages Morgan and Kilgallon were our rocks, but now Kilgallon has gone, we need someone else.
Who were your United heroes?
Well when I was growing up, there were some good players, but no outstanding legends. People like Jags, Chris Morgan - he was our rock - a bit of a hero. And then Neil Warnock - he was the sort of belligerent character you need, a good fiery attitude. Even if you didn't like him, he was funny.
The band - how was recording the second album after the success of the first?
I think we handled it all pretty well. We decided to take a while over it, get it just right, although we didn't immediately get things spot on. It was more difficult because the songs for the first album we'd had for years, so writing new ones was tough. We tried writing on the road, but that just didn't work for us. It suits some, but not us - we need a bit more time.
There are similarities to the first album, but I think it sounds a lot 'bigger'. We're a bit older, we've grown up a bit. We had an idea, but not focussed, but we're really happy with how it's turned out.
