It ended in a 1-1 draw at The Hawthorns on Saturday and, although disappointed with the result, the Newcastle manager did praise the home side.

But the result saw Newcastle fall to 16th place six points above third-from-bottom Wigan Athletic.

Pardew said: "After last week (against Sunderland) it was a decent result.

"We took a lot of criticism but today we showed plenty of energy and character.

"To be honest, the game should have been over at half-time.

"West Brom went direct in the second half but if we had scored that second when we were on top we might have been leaving with all three points."
