Alan Pardew: Unhappy with Newcastle's defending in 3-2 defeat at Everton

Everton established a 3-0 lead at half-time on the back of some slack defending as Romelu Lukaku scored either side of a Ross Barkley goal.

The third goal came via a long punt downfield by Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard and, though Newcastle improved in the second half, Pardew was not happy with his team's defending.

"The goals were poor, so poor, in the first half, and defensively we've got to better than we are at the moment," Pardew told Sky Sports.

"But we've got goals in the team, and we've shown that tonight. We had numerous chances apart from the two goals we've scored, but we've got to tighten up, that's for sure.

"Nothing went right for us and the inconsistency being shown was disturbing at one point. We managed in the second half to get ourselves a little better balanced in the team to make some sort of game of it.

"We came out with a bit of pride and almost at the end got more than that, but the goals in the first half were not acceptable for me, and we're going to have to tighten up and make a couple of changes there."

Yohan Cabaye scored a stunning goal after being introduced at half-time and Pardew confirmed the midfielder will start at Cardiff on Saturday following his recent injury troubles.

Pardew added: "He's a class act. We had a long chat, me and him, yesterday about him starting and we both felt he wasn't quite right for 90 minutes.

"He was terrific in the second half and he hasn't had any problems coming off, so he's an absolute banker for Cardiff.

"That's what I'm looking at. We need that sort of performance, that kind of 90 minutes he gives me with the quality."

I

may well get slated by other United fans for this, but out of the three contenders, I'd far prefer Liverpool to win the title. Yes some elements of their fanbase can be a bit OTT, yes they're our biggest rivals and yes it will make our poor season feel even more like the end of an era (Fergie's gone, Liverpool are back on top). However I just have to applaud Brendan Rodgers and the way he's turned Liverpool around in just a couple of seasons. It...

ooray! We are all excited now, we beat a very mediocre team! With all due respect to WHU supporters, not winning that game shouldn't even be a consideration. This is the problem, there is no winning mentality at the Emirates - we're all congratulating ourselves beating a team that we have a winning record against.

I

s this meant to be an aspiration for United supporters? Moyes mediocrity strikes again. I see the Bayern boys don't want to sign for him, and his reputation amongst the senior European coaches make other key signings unlikely.
