Newcastle had spent much of the first half on the back foot, but improved after the break to score through Yoan Gouffran and Loic Remy.

Gouffran's headed opener arrived on 68 minutes following a brilliant cross in from Cabaye, who had been in discussion with Pardew before delivering the set-piece.

Pardew said: "I just asked him to hit it on the back of their back four with shape and a bit of pace because we weren't really getting any joy from balls going into their box.

"He went for glory, really, but he executed it on the money and I am not going to try to take any credit for that.

"You have to be a top, top player to hit that ball in, and Gouff connected brilliantly and gave us a platform then."

The Newcastle manager was understandably delighted with a victory which went some of the way towards exorcising last weekend's derby defeat at Sunderland.

He said: "I'd like to think we could have had three more points. That would have put us in a great position and we have got to try to make that up in the next 10 games if we can.

"But I do think we have played some really good football. I wouldn't say we were brilliant in the first half, but in the second half, we were very good today."

ow are people still backing Arsenal for the title? It's like you're predicting the tide not to come in; Arsenal will finish third or fourth and make the quarter final of the Champions League. It was ever thus.

othing screams 'Panic!!' when your new manager brings Fellaini on as a sub for your star signing of the summer and within 5 minutes you concede the winner. I know it is only the first game in but I would seriously be sh1**ng myself I was a Man Utd supporter. This has the potential of being very nasty indeed.

n the words of Pete Townsend, meet the new boss, the same as the old boss. Though I would comment that it's 3 more points than we picked up in the same fixture last year, so that's a 100% improvement.
