The 22-year-old Welshman has started the last two games with Davide Santon nursing a knee problem, and has finished on the winning side on each occasion with Loic Remy's late strike seeing off Aston Villa before Saturday's 4-1 Premier League victory at Hull, which will be remembered more for Pardew's touchline head-butt on David Meyler.

With Frenchman Massadio Haidara also in the mix, the manager is delighted with his options in that position, and thrilled with the way Academy graduate Dummett has taken his latest chance.

Pardew said: "We have been patient with him, but he has got a natural left foot and he's a powerful player, good in the air - he has got a lot of attributes.

"I just felt the team was getting a little bit predictable and a left-foot down that side suddenly opened up the pitch a little bit for us, and he has taken that opportunity.

"We have still got Massadio pushing him and obviously Davide when he comes back, so there's really hot competition for that role."

ven if United were to sign CR7 & Messi to play upfront, the fact remains Fletcher and Cleverly are playing in midfield. That's where the problem is. Fletcher is too slow with an awful pass, while Cleverly is simply rubbish
