The Dutch striker joined the Magpies in January on loan for the rest of the season from German outfit Borussia Monchengladbach.

And De Jong is already hoping that Newcastle turn his move into a permanent one in the summer.

"Of course, that is what I want," he told Sky Sports News' Weekend warm-up.

"I want to show myself in the Premier League and Newcastle is a fantastic club, and it would be great for me to sign a long contract here.

"I really like it here, everyone is really helping me - when I came in, I knew a few players like Tim [Krul], Vernon [Anita] and Cheick Tiote from FC Twente - so it is nice they are here too."

De Jong has started three league games since arriving, and a further two substitute appearances - but he is yet to find the back of the net, although he is hopeful his first goal is not far away.

"It is always getting closer, I want to score goals like every player," the Dutchman continued.

"Against Hull I think I did a good job behind Loic [Remy], and helping out he midfield as well. it was a good game for me but of course you want to score goals and be important for the team but when you work hard and win a game, I am happy as well."

With Remy sidelined through injury, De Jong is hoping he could get the chance to replace the Frenchman as the main striker.

"I am not sure what the manager will do, everyone knows I like to play as a number 9 but I can play as a number 10 too," he said.

"I will see what the manages does but I just want to play football as I didn't play for half a year before this."

De Jong believes that after a bad run of form, Newcastle's campaign is firmly back on track following back-to-back wins over Aston Villa and Hull City.

"We had some difficult games where we didn't get results. Aston Villa at home - we worked hard and the game against Hull we played how we need to play with a lot of passion and aggression and that gave us a lot of confidence and we are in a good position now."

Alan Pardew will not be at Craven Cottage as he will serve the first match of his stadium ban, with John Carver taking charge on the day and de Jong does not envisage any real issues.

"We are professional enough as a team, sometimes you need a manager to make a decision but John can do that too and it won't be a problem," he concluded.
