Pardew's team is expected to require a major overhaul in the off-season, with strikers Loic Remy and Luuk de Jong only on loan while midfield playmaker Yohan Cabaye has yet to be replaced.

Hatem Ben Arfa and Sylvain Marveaux have also been linked with summer moves, and Pardew believes club owner Mike Ashley is fully aware of the need to add firepower following three lacklustre performances.

Defeats to rock-bottom Fulham and Everton either side of a last-gasp win over lowly Crystal Palace have left the Magpies short of confidence heading into Saturday's trip to Southampton.

Ashley has attended all three games with Pardew serving a stadium ban, and the Newcastle boss said: "Mike is very much aware. The one thing he likes in his teams is them to be on the front foot and trying to win the game.

"I don't think he likes tactics where teams set out to defend deep and look to nick something, it's not the way he is. It's not his style and it's certainly not my style.

"We have talked about that, so that bodes well. He knows we need some attacking options."

Newcastle have at least been encouraged by the quality of players emerging from their academy, with full-back Paul Dummett the latest to impress in the senior ranks.

Pardew hopes their academy can emulate his former club Southampton, who nurtured the likes of Theo Walcott and Gareth Bale before also producing England stars Adam Lallana and Luke Shaw.

Pardew said: "What they have produced is an exceptional player.

"They have got two there at the moment, in my view - Lallana and Shaw - and before that Walcott and Bale came through there, so it's that player that really makes the difference.

"A lot of clubs bring through three or four, but it's the exceptional ones that Southampton seem to bring through, and that's something that really, really makes a big difference to a Premier League team.

"Southampton, everybody is saying, have had a fantastic season. Well, we are still above them and we want to stay there.

"We have had that question mark ever since we got 36 points, were we just going to see the season out? That's just not the way I am, I wouldn't let that happen with this team."

terling needs to be told though that upon entering the Arsenal squad he will re-enact the final scene from Highlander where he will be thrown around a warehouse by cartoon dragons and then be a mere mortal that will only ever spend three to four weeks a season playing football and the rest on the physio's bed. There can be only one.....player available at The Emirates.

Arsenal interest in Sterling

he game changed in our favour when Carrick came on. We were able to play further up the pitch due to having a player who can give and go with the ball and keep possession. Yet barkley made some runs and Townsend scored a good goal but carrick's inclusion and chiellini's withdrawal made the biggest difference to the flow of the game

o, you've not silenced anyone Andros, i'm afraid. We know you can score a great goal, and it's really handy to have your direct running and willingness to shoot on the bench. But until you can do the other things expected of a winger (beat the man, put a decent cross in, stay wide etc) then you can't expect more than a regular cameo. Wonderful goal though, what a hit! No wonder Buffon wanted the shirt.
