The Dutch international has failed to score in his 10 appearances since his January loan switch from Borussia Monchengladbach.

But the 23-year-old remains hopeful he can earn a switch to St James' Park.

"I just want to improve my game every game," De Jong told the Shields Gazette.

"That's why I love being here. I hope to be important for the team, and after this season, I hope to stay.

"I like it (English football). It's more physical than Germany and Holland.

"It's how I like to play. There are a lot of aerial duels."

Newcastle are known to have been impressed with De Jong's commitment and work-rate and have refused to rule out another move for him.

Indeed, De Jong's older brother Siem is also on Newcastle's radar and both players could yet finalise moves to Tyneside.
