Comedic performances from Welbeck, Anderson, Smalling and Jones (at times), this was a decent enough result and performance. Valencia and Young are still woefully out of form and Antonio really needs to stop doing that turn on a six pence using only his right foot thing... Carrick is really far ahead of our other midfield options, it's unreal and a scary place to be...

crookster, when Kagawa gets up to speed I think you will have your regularly assisting midfielder and we still have Nick Powell to come through although I am wondering what's going on with him at the moment; is he injured or just being held in reserve? If he's fit then surely last night would have been a good time to at least put him on the bench.

Hopefully Jones will still be able to play some part, as he is a good option to have. But of course, we shouldn't plan to play defensively. It is worth remembering that we could (and should) have scored a couple more; it's not like we weren't creating chances.

@varicoseregent i thought they were going to nick an equaliser also. Still the prospect of a all Manchester final that will be good for us neutrals!

Can't help but feel we still have massive problems in midfield... apart from nani who is going to score goals? We are so heavily reliant on our forwards and for me didn't look like a dangerous side until RVP came on. He was fantastic in his little cameo as is he norm for that guy. It aches me to say it as I know my fellow fans are all rightfully enjoying the season so far but our creativity in midfield is still extremely lacking. Nani who is clearly capable of great things with a ball at his feet is still inconsistant over a stretch of games. Young has never cut the mustard and is no more than a squad player. Valencia dear god what has happened to him. Carrick will never ever win you a game and is always found wanting against a quality player. Cleverley I must say i do like. He has a willingness to get on the ball that Carrick sorely lacks unless he is given time and space. With time he could prove to be a very handy player. Hopefully little willy zaha adds a bit of magic to our flanks. I would absolutely love to see a goal scoring or regularly assisting centre midfield player at the club. If we just added that little dimension we could be really something.

I don't think Sir Alex will play the same formation he did at the Bernabeu. We will be much more balanced on our home turf. Phil Jones's injury(if it is indeed as serious as being made out or just for Mourinho's eyes by Sir Alex remains to be seen), is indeed a blow, but even if he played I doubt he would have been given the same limited role as he was in Spain. I expect us to take the game at OT especially since we absolutely need one goal at OT. I don't see us stopping them scoring, and I don't see being so naive to think that we can manage to keep their whole team quiet for 90 more mins. A 3 man midfield of Cleverley, Carrick and Kagawa with Rooney up top with RvP and Valencia covering Rafael on the right will do us good.

In a cup competition, a win is a win. Resilient and tenacious as Reading were, it would have been a travesty if they had nicked themselves a replay and on another day United could have had a hatful.

Well I certainly wasn't happy. There were plenty of chances to score before we actually did and in the end I wouldn't have been surprised if Reading had nicked an equaliser.

s there a PR agency covering Begovich, Odemwingie, Steven Fletcher and Grant Holt or something? Why would you offer a quote like that without having been announced by either club. #headsshoulderskneesandtoesgone

adly this is inevitable. No club outside the top 4/5 can hang on to anyone who shows that kind of talent anymore. Might be best for them to get as much as they can now while his stock is high and start again. On the plus side lads, Grant Holt is still available.
