Wayne Rooney: Back but not on target for England

All eyes were on the unsettled Manchester United striker as he turned out for England in a 3-2 win over Scotland at Wembley after reported hamstring and shoulder injuries.

The 27-year-old, who has been the subject of two unsuccessful bids from Chelsea and is reportedly unhappy at Old Trafford, did not score, but has been backed to come good in time for the forthcoming World Cup qualifying matches.

England travel to Moldova and Ukraine in September before facing an October double-header against Montenegro and Poland that will decide whether or not Brazil awaits Roy Hodgson's men next summer.

"He's worked his socks off," Gerrard said of Rooney.

"He's in good shape, he's trained well all week. Hopefully in a couple of weeks' time he's a little bit sharper, a little bit more match fit and he can get us the important goals to take us to the World Cup. That's what we all want."

Gerrard, who made his 103rd England appearance against Scotland, also hopes his midfield partnership with Jack Wilshere can continue this autumn after injury limited the Arsenal man's progress.

"I enjoyed it," Gerrard added. "Partnerships and relationships take time to develop. The more we play, the better we'll get.

"Everyone's got their fingers crossed that we can both remain fit and both be available for the important games."

still can't see the Phil Jones thing that some people go on about. Whenever I watch him play it's a repeat of headless chicken meets a gurning Bambi on ice for 90 minutes.

P

robably the first list I've come across in a long time where I agree with a large majority of what was written. Can't agree with everything though, Zaba has had an awful season by his standards, I'd put Monreal (a player who I've never rated) up there, gotta give credit where it's due, he's really stepped up his game.
