Ryan Taylor: Determined to make a playing comeback next season

Taylor, who has taken on a scouting role under Alan Pardew in the interim, is recovering after rupturing his ligaments twice in a year. He is determined he will be back in the black and white jersey before too long.

"Realistically, I'd love to be playing from the start of the next season," he told Sky Sports News.

"Is it possible? I think it is, yes, but I have got to listen to the right people."

He is preparing to travel to the US for a third and final opertaion on his knee with reknowned specialist Richard Steadman, a surgeon who has revived the fortunes of many professionals.

Taylor's last Premier League appearance was at Chelsea 14 months ago. Five days later he broke down in a Europa League game. A scan revealed a tear in his cruciate ligamnent.

"At the time I was just thinking about the scan and hoping it wasn't too bad and when the scan came through, it was the worst case scenario," he said.

Surgery followed and nine months of rehab; six months ago he was set for a comeback when a routine training exercise sent him back to square one.

"I've gone to push off and felt something pretty similar to the first time," he said. "Then another scan revealed that there had been another rupture. That was the toughest part of my career so far.

"But the fact that I have such a supportive family and set of friends is a real boost. My wife is always there and the fact that I can go home and see my little boy every day is a real lift. That's how I get a kick and stay motivated."
