Davide Santon: Believes players need to hold their hands up

With just four wins in their previous 14 games in all competitions, Alan Pardew's men have seen their season peter out, sitting comfortably in mid-table, well away from both the relegation zone and the European qualification places.

However, the Magpies were booed by their own fans after a woeful showing in last weekend's 4-0 defeat at Southampton, and Santon understands their frustrations.

"Against Southampton, our mentality was wrong," Santon told The Sun.

"We played like it was a friendly game.

"The fans were right - they booed and I wasn't surprised.

"They had come a long way, they spent a lot of money and I think they deserved better than what they saw."

Many have accused the Newcastle players of already being in holiday mode as they have very little to play for.

However, Santon insist that is not the case, and they will be doing their utmost to improve their final league position.

"The season might be nearly gone but we must always play in the same way," the Italy full-back added.

"The manager has told us we always need to have a winning mentality - whether it be a big or a small team."

S

till reckon Chelsea will go for Khedira as back up for Matic. I think it will turn out to be quite a Mourihno-y window: We'll see the squad players and youth in action pre-season, say things like well, we need not buy anybody and then the club will bid £60m for Pogba and send everybody on loan.

I

would love to be a fly on the wall at the meeting between Milner and Rodgers. I don't know if flies can count, but if they can then I would be counting the number of times Rodgers used the word outstanding in his attempts to get Milner to sign.

Reds and Arsenal chase Milner

W

ell, it wouldn't be a summer without Arsenal fans fretting over losing a key player, and United throwing their weight around and muscling in on transfer deals which are (apparently) near to completion. If we can't be entertained by the football on the pitch, let's enjoy the silly off-pitch soap opera of the transfer season. Hurrah!

Probably. But presumably he would not swap one bench for another. We have mails on over-hyped players, Arsenal enthusiasm, UEFA, FIFA and naked dudes...
