Jermain Defoe: Set to be unveiled in Toronto on Monday

Defoe has long been tipped to join the ambitious Major League Soccer side where his one-time Spurs team-mate Ryan Nelsen is now head coach.

It is understood that the 31-year-old will fly to Canada over the weekend, when he will finalise the move and put pen to paper.

After completing the deal, he is expected to be loaned back to Tottenham until March 1, when he will officially become a Toronto player, two weeks ahead of the club's opening MLS match against Seattle.

The England international was not mentioned by name on Toronto's official website but a teasing image on its homepage talked up an imminent "big deal".

Defoe has spent nine years split across two spells with Tottenham, where his tally of 142 goals ranks him fifth among the club's all-time leading scorers.

He has scored nine this season but all but two of those have come in the Europa League, with Roberto Soldado and, more recently, Emmanuel Adebayor preferred in the starting line-up.

Reports in Canada claim that Toronto will pay Spurs around £6million for Defoe, whose current deal had 18 months left to run.

Toronto are also understood to be putting the finishing touches to a move for USA midfield star Michael Bradley from Italian side Roma.

may well get slated by other United fans for this, but out of the three contenders, I'd far prefer Liverpool to win the title. Yes some elements of their fanbase can be a bit OTT, yes they're our biggest rivals and yes it will make our poor season feel even more like the end of an era (Fergie's gone, Liverpool are back on top). However I just have to applaud Brendan Rodgers and the way he's turned Liverpool around in just a couple of seasons. It...

ooray! We are all excited now, we beat a very mediocre team! With all due respect to WHU supporters, not winning that game shouldn't even be a consideration. This is the problem, there is no winning mentality at the Emirates - we're all congratulating ourselves beating a team that we have a winning record against.

s this meant to be an aspiration for United supporters? Moyes mediocrity strikes again. I see the Bayern boys don't want to sign for him, and his reputation amongst the senior European coaches make other key signings unlikely.
