Fit-again midfielder Lucas Leiva and Daniel Agger have both been rested for the game in Italy, which Brendan Rodgers' team must win to be sure of qualifying from the group stages.

Uruguay striker Suarez, who is suspended for Sunday's Premier League trip to West Ham United, is set to make his first away appearance in Europe this season.

Jose Reina, Glen Johnson and Martin Skrtel were also part of Liverpool's travelling party but Gerrard was absent due to what is understood to be illness.

Lucas was not included in order to protect the Brazil international, who only returned from a three-month injury absence in last weekend's win over Southampton.

And Liverpool assistant boss Colin Pascoe thinks Lucas' return will aid Joe Allen in the long-term.

Pascoe told Liverpool's official website: "Lucas is the holding pivot of the three in the midfield and his presence just releases Joe a little bit further forward.

"On Saturday, you could see this in the way Joe was pushed up 10, 15 or 20 yards further forward."

Liverpool squad in full:

Jones, Johnson, Enrique, Sahin, Suarez, Cole, Assaidi, Henderson, Coates, Downing, Carragher, Allen, Reina, Suso, Sterling, Shelvey, Coady, Skrtel, Wisdom.

m starting to think Roman may never actually be happy at the top level. If he wants all conquering fancy football I wonder if he'd be better off buying a lower division side then paying outlandish salaries to attract high caliber players too good for the division.
