Dean Holdsworth: Tuesday's victory was not enough to save his job

That win left the Shots 20th in the League Two standings but they remain in a perilous position, just two points clear of bottom club AFC Wimbledon, and all the teams below them have a game in hand on the Hampshire side.

And Aldershot released a club statement on Wednesday night announcing that they had parted company with Holdsworth.

The statement read: "Following a difficult run of results, which has returned just seven points from the last seven games, and despite Tuesday evening's hard fought result, the board of directors have taken the decision to terminate the contract of Dean Holdsworth with immediate effect.

"The board would like to place on record their thanks and appreciation for Dean's efforts during his time at the football club and acknowledge the difficult circumstances under which Dean has managed to steer us out of the relegation places.

"However, despite this, and taking into account our current league position, the board felt the time was right to maximise the positive momentum of Tuesday's result, in order to give us the best possible chance of retaining our league status.

"With this in mind and just 13 games left of the season, we must now move quickly and make every effort to find a suitable replacement who can help us achieve those immediate ambitions.

"We understand the time sensitive nature of any discussions and hope to be able to confirm the position prior to Saturday's home fixture against Fleetwood Town."

A prolific forward during his playing career for the likes of Brentford, Wimbledon and Bolton, Holdsworth took charge of Aldershot in January 2011.

He led them to safety that season and they then finished 11th last term, not far away from the play-off positions, but have regressed this season and are battling with Barnet, Plymouth, Accrington and Wimbledon at the wrong end of the table.
