Phil Brown: Happy with his new side's performance despite loss

Phil Brown was managing Southend for only the third time having taken over from Paul Sturrock just two weeks ago but he failed to prevent the Essex outfit, backed by 31,000 supporters, from tasting defeat in their first-ever cup final at Wembley.

And now he wants the club's focus to shift fully on to their outside hopes of a play-off place in League Two.

"Certainly the effort and determination of the players was there to try and win the game, but that little bit of nous and little bit of quality as well as little bit of detail," Brown said.

"It was that attention to detail that was why we were one-nil down in the first half, and playing in the wrong areas in the second half was the reason we were two-nil down.

"But I can't fault them for trying to get something from the game.

"It was far from a 2-0 easy win."

Brown added: "I've said to the players after the game - nobody is feeling sorry for themselves, we don't have time for that - we've got five cup finals to come.

"The players still have one eye on promotion and rightly so - now we've got two eyes on it, this game is out of the way."

ven if United were to sign CR7 & Messi to play upfront, the fact remains Fletcher and Cleverly are playing in midfield. That's where the problem is. Fletcher is too slow with an awful pass, while Cleverly is simply rubbish
