Rafael Benitez was appointed as interim boss in November until the end of this season, while neither of his predecessors, Roberto Di Matteo nor Andre Villas-Boas, managed a full campaign.

Lampard believes the uncertainty could become a problem for a club who have had 10 men in the hot seat in 13 years.

"Whatever the situation, it would be nice if a manager could come in and have a good crack at some consistency and stay in the job," Lampard said.

"We all understand we've had some interim managers and the fans and the club would probably be happier if we could get a manager who could stay for more than half a season, or for some period of time."

Meanwhile, Lampard reckons the race for the Champions League qualifying spots will go to the wire this season.

"We would be in a good position, to be sure, if we win it but it is a tough game this weekend. Then we have Manchester United away, Tottenham at home, Villa away and Everton at home," he added.

"It is a hard run-in so I don't think we will say we have a stranglehold on it until we actually have it. It could go down to the last game of the season."

S

till reckon Chelsea will go for Khedira as back up for Matic. I think it will turn out to be quite a Mourihno-y window: We'll see the squad players and youth in action pre-season, say things like well, we need not buy anybody and then the club will bid £60m for Pogba and send everybody on loan.

would love to be a fly on the wall at the meeting between Milner and Rodgers. I don't know if flies can count, but if they can then I would be counting the number of times Rodgers used the word outstanding in his attempts to get Milner to sign.

Reds and Arsenal chase Milner

ell, it wouldn't be a summer without Arsenal fans fretting over losing a key player, and United throwing their weight around and muscling in on transfer deals which are (apparently) near to completion. If we can't be entertained by the football on the pitch, let's enjoy the silly off-pitch soap opera of the transfer season. Hurrah!
