Stephane Sessegnon (centre): Sent off for foul on Yacouba Sylla

The 28-year-old was sent off by referee Lee Probert for a foul on Yacouba Sylla with 21 minutes remaining of the game at Villa Park.

The Benin international will have his case heard by an independent regulatory commission on Wednesday afternoon.

If the appeal fails, Sessegnon faces a three-match ban, meaning he will miss Sunderland's last three games of the season, at home against Stoke and Southampton and away at Tottenham.

Sessegnon has performed well for the Black Cats since Paolo Di Canio replaced Martin O'Neill as manager.

He scored in the 3-0 win at Newcastle before netting the only goal in the 1-0 home win over Everton as Di Canio's side improved their chances of avoiding relegation.

They are currently 15th in the table, five points above 18th-placed Wigan but having played a game more.
