Flohe, who played at club level for Cologne and 1860 Munich, was a member of West Germany's squad which won the 1974 World Cup.

Although he was an unused substitute for the final, he did start in one of the group matches and came on as a substitute in two others.

Two years later Flohe played in the final of the European Championship in Belgrade, where he successfully converted a penalty during the shoot-out which Czechoslovakia eventually won.

He was a member of Germany's World Cup finals squad again in 1978, the same year that Cologne clinched the domestic league and cup double.

He played in 343 Bundesliga matches and ended his career due to injury in 1980.

Flohe was capped 39 times and had been in a coma since suffering a stroke in May 2010.

According to the Cologne Express he died on in his home town of Euskirchen on Saturday.

h Daniel. I could spend hours on this subject putting the world to rights. You can even take a step back and ask why football fans (and society in general) have this need to know that something will happen before it actually does. There are times this important, when it comes to things like war, food production and natural disasters. A man you've never met changing his job? Not so much.
