Jonathan Walters: Ankle problem

A 2-1 defeat in Dublin left Ireland three points adrift of second-placed Sweden wiht three games to play - starting in Austria on Tuesday.

And Giovanni Trapattoni will take his side to Vienna with doubts over Jonathan Walters, Glenn Whelan and Simon Cox.

Nottingham Forest forward Cox has a dead leg, while Stoke pair Walters and Whelan finished the game complaining, respectively, of an ankle problem and a tight thigh muscle.

All three are expected to be on the flight to Austria on Sunday, but a depleted squad is the last thing Trapattoni needs as he fights to keep Ireland's qualifying hopes alive.

There were boos among the Aviva Stadium crowd at Friday's final whistle, and the manager afterwards admitted victory in Austria is essential.

He said: "Obviously, we need to beat Austria. Until the table says we are completely out, we must think we can do it.

"I must continue because there are another three games and in three games, anything can happen. We have an opportunity to continue this and we have to believe, also the team and dream."
