The Football Supporters' Federation is lobbying MPs in a bid to introduce an initial trial at Premier League clubs - although Aston Villa are the only top flight club to lend their support to the proposals.

Standing areas in the Premier league and Championship have become mandatory since the Hillsborough disaster 23 years ago - but the Football Supporters' Federation is confident the pilot scheme will prove standing is now a safe way to watch football.

A spokesman said: "We need to find out if it can work and the only way to do that is to trial it.

"Then experts, safety officers and the police can see how it works in a modern context."

But a Premier League statement read: "Since the introduction of all-seater stadia the supporter experience has improved significantly.

"The police, safety officers and licensing authorities remain clear... that crowd management has improved as a result of all-seater stadiums being in place in the top two divisions."

The FSF say their idea has the support of the Scottish Premier League as well as Villa, plus 12 Football League clubs, including Peterborough United, Crystal Palace, Cardiff City, Derby County, Hull City and AFC Wimbledon.
