Jonjo Shelvey: Looking to force his way back into the Liverpool starting XI

The 20-year-old midfielder concedes that he was a long way short of his best during a disappointing 3-1 defeat at the Britannia Stadium.

Shelvey had, however, impressed up until that point, making 14 appearances under Brendan Rodgers and earning senior international recognition with England during a World Cup qualifier against San Marino in October.

He has, however, found himself out of favour since Christmas - making just two FA Cup appearances.

Shelvey is prepared to knuckle down and fight his way back into Liverpool's starting XI, but believes he can consider himself unfortunate to have been cast aside so suddenly.

Ahead of an outing for England's U21 side against Sweden on Tuesday, he said in The Independent: "I played against Stoke and obviously I didn't have too great a game.

"I had a few personal issues that were going on in my life. I didn't think I was the only one that had a bad game that day but I was the one that suffered, if you know what I mean.

"You just have to take it on the chin and work hard in training and try to get myself back in the team, which I'm trying to do."
