The Welshman, currently the outstanding British talent, struck a long-range effort in injury time at Upton Park to secure a 3-2 victory and move Spurs third in the Premier League.

It was a stunning goal and, having also opened the scoring in the first half, it was Bale's 23rd of the season in all competitions for club and country in what is a fabulous campaign.

Some pundits have suggested the 23-year-old is almost singlehandedly dragging Tottenham back towards the Champions League but he told Sky Sports: "I am just enjoying my football. That is the most important thing.

"The team is playing well, which makes it easier. It is not about me, it is about the team. We played well tonight."

Bale had opened the scoring against West Ham in the 13th minute before Andy Carroll equalised from the penalty spot before half-time.

Joe Cole then put West Ham in front in the second half but Gylfi Sigurdsson equalised before Bale struck his superb, late winner to allow Spurs to overtake Chelsea.

The result sets Tottenham up perfectly for next weekend's North London derby against Arsenal, who are also top-four rivals as they sit four points behind in fifth place.

"We know it is going to be a massive game," said Bale. "They are a great team and we obviously want to get the three points and keep our Champions League hopes alive."

m starting to think Roman may never actually be happy at the top level. If he wants all conquering fancy football I wonder if he'd be better off buying a lower division side then paying outlandish salaries to attract high caliber players too good for the division.
