Paolo Di Canio: Takes charge of his first Sunderland game at Chelsea

Di Canio was appointed as Black Cats boss this week following the sacking of predecessor Martin O'Neill, who had previously overseen eight matches without a win.

The Italian takes charge of his first game on Saturday - away at Chelsea - with his new side currently just one point clear of the relegation zone with seven matches to play.

"He's a confident manager and wants to make his players feel like they're the best players in the world," Johnson told the club's official website. "I think he's going to get the best out of the lads. He demands your best and we will have to work hard.

"When players are full of confidence they're going to play well, so hopefully we can take that into Sunday because it's a tough game and a big game."

Johnson says Di Canio has wasted no time in mapping out his plan to steer Sunderland away from the bottom three.

"It's been a lot different," Johnson said. "Everyone is still getting used to it but it's so far so good, really. It's probably what we need. Everyone is excited and can't wait to play.

"He's full of enthusiasm and energy. If you do well for him he's going to be a great boss to play for.

"I think any time a new manager comes in everything happens so quickly and it's on top of you. It's difficult coming in just a week before a game and the gaffer is trying to get his points across.

"It's a lot to take in all at once but come Sunday I think we will know what he wants from us."

e'll be fine, no problem. If they do get relegated, he's definitely going to ask how anyone could ever have thought that Villa were going to be fine given their problems before he came.

toke though. Hmn. I don't think it was defending that made people dislike Stoke so much as the out and out cheating/nastiness they regularly displayed. That, and they kept buying the odd flair player and then ruining them (Oh! Tuncay, what were you thinking?).

ell that really inspires me with confidence. No point in training, deciding on a coherent formation, or playing players in their best positions, let's just hope we get lucky.
