Andre Villas-Boas: Turning the focus on Aaron Lennon's impressive season

Gareth Bale has been the focus of much of the media attention on Spurs and the Wales international is heavily tipped to win at least one of the PFA awards on Sunday, while he also remains among the favourites to win the Football Writers' Association plaudits.

But Lennon has played a key role in their push for a UEFA Champions League place and their Europa League run and Villas-Boas was keen to recognise his importance to the team as he prepares his side for the trip to Wigan on Saturday.

"He has had a wonderful year," said Villas-Boas.

"He has scored in some wonderful games, is a player that helps offensively and defensively, he has great responsibility and he has had a couple of games as a captain which is also important for him.

"He has been great throughout despite a couple of injuries."

Lennon's pace has always been his key asset but he has been criticised in the past for his poor delivery from the flanks.

That has improved markedly this season though, with the 26-year-old putting in 42 crosses and contributing seven assists.

"I think he has developed his game," added Villas-Boas.

"He has developed his diagonal balls, his passing, his crossing, and we've seen him finishing situations more often this season. That comes through training."

Victory at the DW Stadium would push Spurs up from fifth to third in the Premier League table just 24 hours before Arsenal and Chelsea face Manchester United and Swansea, respectively.

A poor first half against Manchester City was followed by an improved performance after the break as Tottenham scored three times in eight minutes to secure a 3-1 victory last weekend and Vilas-Boas is keen for them to build on that result.

"We fought very, very hard against City. It was a game we needed to win to keep us in the battle," added the Portuguese.

"It gave us a tremendous boost of confidence. To transfer it to the Wigan game is our objective.

"The opponent is completely different, they are involved in a different battle and only if we are able to transfer that motivation will we be able to get the three points.

"I think probably out of these remaining games the Wigan game could be the decisive factor for our run in."
