Christian Benteke: Set to be offered a new deal

Villa look set to open talks with the Belgian, if and when they secure their Premier League status - after a brilliant debut campaign in England.

Nominated for the Young Player of the Year award, Benteke has scored 18 league goals and is reportedly emerging as a target for a host of clubs.

Villa remain confident of keeping Benteke and will offer him new terms, but Lambert rubbished suggestions that a Demba Ba-style clause could be inserted.

"I don't think you can put any figures in because it just creates problems," Lambert told the Birmingham Mail.

"It's not something I've ever thought about with him. To be fair to Christian, he's never ever said anything about contracts or anything."

Lambert is hopeful of offering terms to a number of his squad and not just Benteke, with Andreas Weimann, Matt Lowton and Ashley Westwood also in line for fresh deals.

"There's a few of the lads that you would think 'yes, he's done great' but there's no point in doing that yet," said Lambert.

"We've got to get over the line, that's the thing. We've still got goals to achieve. But it's something at the end of the season that you would look at.

"I think there's a few of them playing really well and Matty's definitely one of them. There's a few lads who you think have done really well but we've got to achieve something first."

may well get slated by other United fans for this, but out of the three contenders, I'd far prefer Liverpool to win the title. Yes some elements of their fanbase can be a bit OTT, yes they're our biggest rivals and yes it will make our poor season feel even more like the end of an era (Fergie's gone, Liverpool are back on top). However I just have to applaud Brendan Rodgers and the way he's turned Liverpool around in just a couple of seasons. It...

ooray! We are all excited now, we beat a very mediocre team! With all due respect to WHU supporters, not winning that game shouldn't even be a consideration. This is the problem, there is no winning mentality at the Emirates - we're all congratulating ourselves beating a team that we have a winning record against.

I

s this meant to be an aspiration for United supporters? Moyes mediocrity strikes again. I see the Bayern boys don't want to sign for him, and his reputation amongst the senior European coaches make other key signings unlikely.
