Fergie: No Hernandez doubts

Sir Alex Ferguson was never seriously worried by the thought Javier Hernandez could have been a one-hit wonder at Manchester United.

Hernandez had a stellar debut campaign following his arrival from Mexico in 2010, scoring 20 times to earn a place in United's UEFA Champions League final starting line-up.

But last term the instinctive striker had to endure slim pickings following a delayed pre-season because of his international commitments in the Gold Cup and then he was hospitalised following a head injury in training ahead of a game with the MLS All-Stars.

Hernandez ended up scoring 12 goals and had slipped behind Danny Welbeck in the pecking order up front.

With speculation surfacing about interest from Real Madrid and Robin van Persie completing a big-money move from Arsenal, Hernandez's Old Trafford future seemed to be in the balance.

However, the clinical marksman netted a double against Aston Villa, taking his tally to eight - seven of which have come in his last five appearances.

"You could worry about that," said Ferguson, when asked about the potential for Hernandez never living up to his first-term heroics.

"But we examined his previous summers and the answer was there.

"You can play too much football, particularly young players growing and developing."

With another Gold Cup this summer and the World Cup after that, Ferguson may feel it is time to give the 24-year-old a rest and help develop his finishing prowess that has earned so many comparisons to Old Trafford legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

"Javier is instinctive in terms of his space and movement," Ferguson added.

"He has always had that. That was the attraction when we first saw him. He is good at finding space and has impressive speed off the mark."
