Robin van Persie: Tribute to Ferguson

Van Persie was brought to Old Trafford by Ferguson last summer in a £24million deal and that move has been hailed as the key factor in United's title success this season.

And despite spending less than 12-months under Ferguson's guidance, van Persie is full of praise for the Scot.

"I'm sad to hear that the manager is retiring," he told the Mirror.

"But I'm really happy I've had the opportunity and the honour to work with him.

"He's a great manager and, above all, an even greater person. I have to thank him for an amazing year and for making my dream come true by winning the league."

Northern Irish star Jonny Evans says he and all the players were stunned by the news of Ferguson's retirement.

"A lot was said about rumours flying around during our golf day but it wasn't really like that," said Evans.

"We came in the next day, a meeting was called and the manager told us he was retiring.

"It was still a shock because no one saw it coming.

"Everyone is looking forward to working with David Moyes but are a bit gutted Sir Alex is leaving.

"He's done a fantastic job here and everyone is grateful for that."
