The game is the first of four in 10 days and Scot Moyes is mindful of rotating the players during the busy festive period to keep them fresh.

Moyes will need to check on the fitness of a number of key men from Sunday's 3-0 victory over Aston Villa in Birmingham before finalising his line-up.

"We have a squad of players who I believe can all play in any game, so I'll look at them and see who I think is ready," he said.

"We have a lot of games coming up and we need to use that squad, so I'll look at this game and see who is best suited. But I think we have fielded a strong side in every game we have played.

"There were a few I expected to play [against Villa] but got injured on Saturday before we travelled down. There is nothing fresh and hopefully I won't find anything fresh."

United are bidding to reach the last four of the Capital One Cup for the first time since winning the competition in 2010 and Moyes added: "All cup competitions are important to Manchester United."

Like Moyes, Stoke manager Mark Hughes is taking a bit of time to adjust to his new career at the Britannia Stadium.

"Like a lot of clubs there is this word transition happening and the same thing is happening there," said Moyes. "They are changing.

"Mark Hughes is the manager. He is very experienced in Premier League terms. He will put his own mark on Stoke."

I

may well get slated by other United fans for this, but out of the three contenders, I'd far prefer Liverpool to win the title. Yes some elements of their fanbase can be a bit OTT, yes they're our biggest rivals and yes it will make our poor season feel even more like the end of an era (Fergie's gone, Liverpool are back on top). However I just have to applaud Brendan Rodgers and the way he's turned Liverpool around in just a couple of seasons. It...

ooray! We are all excited now, we beat a very mediocre team! With all due respect to WHU supporters, not winning that game shouldn't even be a consideration. This is the problem, there is no winning mentality at the Emirates - we're all congratulating ourselves beating a team that we have a winning record against.

I

s this meant to be an aspiration for United supporters? Moyes mediocrity strikes again. I see the Bayern boys don't want to sign for him, and his reputation amongst the senior European coaches make other key signings unlikely.
