Mark Hughes: Celebrates with Marc Wilson at the final whistle

The Potters recorded their first league win over Chelsea since 1975 on Saturday as on-loan Liverpool winger Assaidi came off the bench to score a sumptuous winner at the Britannia Stadium.

The Morocco international was unhappy to be taken out of the starting line-up following the stalemate at home to Cardiff in midweek but was all smiles this weekend after helping his club record a famous victory.

"I disappointed him (Assiadi) today because I took him out of the team," said Hughes.

"I did say at the time 'you need to be ready... you need to come on and make an impact'. I didn't anticipate he was going to make such an impact, but I'm glad he did!"

Stoke fell behind to an Andre Schurrle goal after 10 minutes and were second best for much of the first half, although they did go in level at the break after Petr Cech made a mistake on a Marko Arnautovic corner that led to Peter Crouch equalising.

In the second half, Stephen Ireland and Schurrle traded goals early on before Assaidi had the final say.

"We showed great character after the disappointment of conceding an early goal," added Hughes.

"I thought the response was exemplary and the quality of the goals for both sides was outstanding. I really enjoyed the game.

"Chelsea are a good team individually and collectively and at times we struggled to work out their rotations and their movement, but we stuck at it.

"In the second half, we were excellent. We upped our intensity to match them.

"They asked a lot of questions but we always had a threat."

S I've always envisioned him as a Pirlo or a Scholes, though he needs some of Andy Murray's conditioning and shiny, ankle supports to keep his own from buckling under the tackles that will (inevitably) come his way. He's got the physique and low centre of gravity to flourish, but needs to make himself more resilient.

s a United fan I fell I can say this without accusation of bias, Sergio Aguero is for me the only player close to Ronaldo or Messi, what goes against him is his injury record, Hazard is good in fits but doesn't give enough end product in my eyes, Tevez would be 4th for me
