Houghton: Mourinho must evolve

Jose Mourinho will have to adapt his philosophy and produce an exciting brand of football if he is to have a long-term future at Chelsea under owner Roman Abrahamovich, according to Ray Houghton.

Ray Houghton: Says Mourinho must adapt philosophy long-term

Mourinho masterminded another vintage counter-attacking performance at Anfield on Sunday as his Chelsea side beat title rivals Liverpool 2-0.

But Houghton says results will not be enough to appease Abramovich in the long-run and insists Chelsea's owner desperately wants to see his team win, and win in style.

"The owner has brought in a lot of managers because he wants a different type of football," Houghton told The Monday View on Sky Sports News.

"He wants expansive, open football which is easy on the eye which is going to appease the fans so that the fans enjoy coming to Stamford Bridge to watch their team play.

"I think modern fans want to come and see open, attractive football.

"It didn't keep Robert di Matteo in a job (despite winning the Champions League with Chelsea in 2012) because the owner wants open, attractive football. That's what he wants and it's up to the manager to deliver that.

"And certainly with the amount of money the club has spent recently you would expect a lot more going forward from them."

Former Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino believes the current squad have completely bought into Mourinho's philosophy but agrees that the 51-year-old must reinvent his side's style of play at some point in the future.

"I think they have shown that they are the best organised team," Cascarino said.

"They don't have the flair of an Aguero, a Suarez or a Sturridge but they're a team that totally believe in what the manager is trying to setup.

"They know exactly their role from the first minute to the last and I think Mourinho deserves a lot of credit for that.

"But can Chelsea keep playing the way they can? I don't think they can.

"He's moaned about not having the forwards or that they haven't got quite what they require to be that level higher and I think that is the next step for Chelsea.

"Mourinho is in a very dubious position at the football club because at some stage they have to produce a slightly more adventurous team."
