The Red Devils host their Merseyside rivals at Old Trafford on Sunday and new signing Sturridge could line up alongside Luis Suarez in attack for the visitors.
But Ferguson believes the 23-year-old's chequered career means he is not certain to fire immediately for the Reds.
He told United Review: "The big issue for Liverpool is whether they include new signing Daniel Sturridge.
"Certainly the arrival of Sturridge gives Brendan Rodgers more strength and options up front.
"Sturridge has had a few clubs but I don't blame him for jumping at the chance of joining Liverpool because he just wasn't playing regularly with Chelsea and I always rate a player whose priority is wanting to play.
"Even so, his track record moving between a number of clubs suggests Brendan Rodgers is taking a bit of a gamble, but he clearly knows what he is doing."
Sturridge arrived at Anfield for a rumoured £12m at the start of the year and opened his goal account after just seven minutes of his debut in the 2-1 FA Cup victory at Mansfield last weekend.
