Rodgers: It's a great victory

Brendan Rodgers hailed Liverpool's 3-2 turnaround triumph over Tottenham as a "great victory" for his team.

The Reds were behind to a Jan Vertonghen brace despite Luis Suarez's opener but a second-half equaliser from Stewart Downing and a Steven Gerrard penalty won it for the home side at Anfield.

"I think our character in the game was outstanding," Rodgers told Sky Sports.

"Earlier on in the season that game might have tipped against us but the longer we've worked together now the more cohesion we've shown to keep going.

"We're making this a difficult place to play these days and I thought the players were brilliant against an outstanding side in Tottenham and we keep the run going."

Tottenham looked to be in the ascendancy when 2-1 up after the break but Rodgers withdrew Philippe Coutinho for Joe Allen and his side managed to turn things around.

The manager added: "There was a period at the beginning of the second half [where Spurs dominated]. We normally control the games better than we did today.

"That was the reason we made the change early in the second half - to get our control back and get three in midfield. That helped us as well as obviously the players working very hard.

"You're at the business end now. This has been our focus and we've got real good momentum now. We've got our own performance targets and we're working towards them.

"I think at this point of the season you want to be winning games. We've shown great character and mentality and against an outstanding Tottenham side it was a great victory for us.

"I'm delighted for the players because they've put so much into that today."

It was a great victory., and not a hint of a Brendanism at all. It was great game also. Biggest compliment you could pay Liverpool is to absolutely not consider 4th place. I think. Super Sunday.
