Heighway: Improve technique

Steve Heighway spent nine years as Liverpool Academy director and believes a new focus on teaching technical skills needs to be introduced.

Speaking to Sky Sports News, Heighway was speaking following FA chairman's Greg Dyke's key-note speech on Wednesday - when he highlighted the problems within English football, including the lack of high quality youth coaches.

For Liverpool coach Heighway feels teaching technique is an issue in England.

"I would estimate there are 15,000 English kids being taught, coached regularly every week in our centre of excellence and academies, so numbers is not a problem," he said.

"If we have got that massive body, it is a huge responsibility to give those kids the right beginnings, and that will be a revolution.

"You need to sell people on this, people are sceptical about teaching technique, it means teaching wide players to play with their back to the line, how to receive a ball square on and beat players, it means midfield players with a wide range of receiving skills - look at Xavi and Iniieta the way the ball flows through them, the range of skills there - the forwards, how to role and spin.

"I am a bit of an idealist but maybe that that is what is needed this time around."

t's why Mourinho is so successful. He gives players a specific, limited set of functions to perform. They are but a cog in a machine. Do no more, do no less. I assume he learnt it from LvG :)

really hope that someone in the mainstream media spots that the Bayern manager played for and managed Barcelona quite well, and thinks to mention it in the build up. That would be really interesting.
