Brendan Rodgers: Wants to make further additions

Liverpool are awaiting the completion of their eighth transfer of the summer transfer window as Alberto Moreno completes the formalities of his £12m move from Sevilla.

And Rodgers says the overhaul of his squad was essential, insisting the club will not be making sweeping changes on this scale in seasons to come.

"We needed to develop the squad this year," he said. "We had a sustained challenge last season in the Premier League where we had 12 or 13 players, so irrespective of the people that went out this summer we needed more depth.

"I'm really happy with the players we've brought in because that’s going to allow us to cope with injuries and cope with the competitions.

"And, as I said, if we can add one or two more in the areas that we want to then we'll have had a great window and it will set us up not only for this window.

"We never brought anyone in in January so we needed to do that this summer, and this summer will probably be our biggest window for the next couple of years so we hope to get one or two more in."

Liverpool went on a run of 10 wins from 12 matches as they took last season's Premier League title race to the last game of the season, eventually finishing second to Manchester City.

But Rodgers says last season's exploits are in the past, revealing his target for the coming year is to lift his first piece of silverware as Liverpool manager.

"It counts for nothing what happened last year, that's all gone now, but one thing we'll carry on from that is the belief," he said.

"We're really focused on the next games, we're end-to-end now into a real long, hard season ahead but a really exciting season because of the talents and the developments of the players.

"We, like the top teams, would like to win a trophy. That would be an aim for ourselves but of course in the league it's about sustaining the Champions League football and for that you want to arrive in fourth.

"Once you've consolidated that then you can look beyond that. That would be our aim, certainly this season."

Rodgers also insisted Liverpool can cope without former striker Luis Suarez this season, pointing to last weekend's 4-0 friendly win over Borussia Dortmund as evidence his squad have got goals in them.

"You saw against Dortmund we have goals in the team," he said.

"We had evidence of that last season as well and over the two years I've been here when Luis hasn't played we have won most of our games.

"We had nearly a 70 per cent win rate in the Premier League last year, which is a fantastic achievement, and we hope to continue that."
