Wenger prepared to spend

Arsene Wenger has revealed he has cash available to sign new players in January and is prepared to spend it, but insisted he will not be bullied into panic buys.

Arsene Wenger: Prepared to invest but won't be rushed

Pressure is building on the Arsenal manager to invest in his squad after an inconsistent first half of the season saw the club lose seven matches in all competitions.

The Gunners currently sit fifth in the Premier League table, but appear more detached from the top teams in the country than at any other time during the Frenchman's reign.

They are also facing stiff competition from the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Everton for UEFA Champions League qualification.

However, Wenger is adamant he will not make a kneejerk reaction.

"If we can add one or two exceptional players, we will do it," he said. "What we do not want to do is add players just because people put us under pressure to buy players.

"That is where we have to be strong enough. If we find a player who will give us something special, we will do it, but that, in January, will not be easy.

"We have money, and why should I not spend it if it is to find the right players?"

Arsenal's last outing was a 5-2 win over Reading at the Madejski Stadium.

Although the home team were woeful at times and looked desperately short on confidence, Wenger saw enough from his players to suggest they can take the club forward.

Keeping the faith

He said: "I have seen some interesting aspects on Monday night at Reading. Let's see how far this team can go.

"I believe as well the first and most important thing is to keep confidence in the players we have. If we are consistent, we can come back.

"What is important is this team develops in the way we want to play."

While admitting players could be arriving during the transfer window, Wenger was insistent that nobody would be going in the opposite direction.

Andre Santos, Andrey Arshavin and Gervinho have all failed to impress this season, but the manager said they still have his support.

"The insurance I give them is the club has faith in them and at the moment I decide the technical policy of the club," he added. "I believe it is important that the club has these players for a longer period."
