The Magpies have so far brought in just Loic Remy on loan, while the club have rejected a bid of around £10million from Arsenal for Yohan Cabaye, who is also reported to interest PSG.

Pardew met owner Mike Ashley this week to discuss the transfer situation before the window closes on September 2nd and he insists he does not have to sell to bolster his squad.

He told the Chronicle: "I think the will is there to bring in a player, maybe two, if nothing else went out the door.

"We are all aware that we need a couple more. It's not straightforward. It's not like we need two, so let's go out and get two.

"We need to be on our guard against other players being targeted.

"So it's a moving feast. Therefore you have to be ready. We met on Tuesday to be ready."

Amid the transfer speculation, Pardew left Cabaye out of his side which lost 4-0 at Manchester City on Monday.

He still wants the France international to stay at the club and hopes fans will not turn on the midfielder if he opts out of playing against West Ham on Saturday.

He added: "I think that fans have to understand - and I'm sure they do because they are an intelligent bunch - there has to be a way back for him.

"There's a solution that he goes. There's also a solution that he stays.

"If he stays, he has to be in a position where he produces his best football. He has to have faith in the manager and he has faith in the group around him and that we'll support him.

"I have to support him, and I will. He is a great player that will be difficult to replace - I'd like him to stay like our fans do."
