Martinez: No update on Baines

Everton boss Roberto Martinez says a new contract for Leighton Baines is not a 'train of thought' at present.

Leighton Baines: Has raised his game again in 2013/14

The Toffees full-back will see his current deal expire in the summer of 2015.

With there still over 18 months left to run on that agreement, there is no rush to get fresh terms in place.

Everton were, however, forced to fend off interest from Manchester United over the summer and Martinez indicated in September that talks would be held with Baines regarding an extension.

Those discussions are yet to take place, but those at Goodison Park do not consider Baines' future to be an issue of grave concern.

Martinez said: "There's no train of thought on that at the moment.

"All that matters is that Leighton is enjoying his football. That's the only thing I'm focusing on."

Baines' performances this term suggest he is happy with life on Merseyside, with Martinez full of praise for a man who is hoping his domestic form will earn him a place in the England squad for the 2014 World Cup.

He added: "He's increasing all his personal stats. I think all his performance stats have improved from last season.

"That, for me, is very important - someone of his age and maturity is starting to enjoy his football in a great manner. The fact that he's developed his performance level as he has in the early weeks of the season is very significant. That's what matters to me.

"Everything else is just a case of trying to find an issue from the outside and see what we will comment on."

ven if United were to sign CR7 & Messi to play upfront, the fact remains Fletcher and Cleverly are playing in midfield. That's where the problem is. Fletcher is too slow with an awful pass, while Cleverly is simply rubbish
