The Goodison Park side are currently sitting fifth in the table, four points behind Premier League pacesetters Arsenal.

Everton are preparing for a trip to Swansea on Sunday, with home games against Sunderland and Southampton in the space of four days, before starting the New Year away to Stoke.

Jagielka said: "We had a pretty decent start to the season, we've carried that on, we've got a tough run of fixtures now where hopefully we'll pick up quite a few points over Christmas and keep ourselves in the running.

"The league has been quite strange this year. There's been a lot of teams beating other teams by some crazy scorelines but for us it's all about how we do.

"At the moment we're in pretty decent form and we've got some really vital games especially at home over the festive period.

Everton and Southampton have the best defensive record in the top flight, and Jagielka reckons Roberto Martinez has inherited a strong united squad from former boss David Moyes.

With the exception of Bryan Oviedo replacing the injured Leighton Baines, Everton have had a familiar look to their defence for some time, which is an advantage as far as Jagielka is concerned.

"Obviously Brian's come in for the last few weeks, but other than that pretty much the back five has stayed as it is, and we've been together for a while now," Jagielka added.

"So it's been pretty simple for the manager to keep us going in a direction that obviously David Moyes left and managed to tweak things going forward.

"We're delighted to keep the clean sheets, but it's all about winning the games at the moment."

hould have stayed because we carried him for 6.5 years. And then he has a breakthrough season, and was gone soon after. MU fans, you would be as disgusted had C Ronaldo left in 2007 and not 2009.

ood grief. Someone guessed that the form English player at the moment might be in his national side with some other players? And that's espionage? Now if they discovered that Emile Heskey was going to be in the starting line up.... at right back.... THAT would be espionage. Give it a rest Roy.
