His Trotters drew 2-2 with Blackpool at the Reebok, only to be denied by Leicester who notched a late winner in a five-goal thriller against Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.

All the goals at Bolton came in the first half with Matt Phillips and Ludo Sylvestre firing the Seasiders into a two-goal lead before Chris Eagles and Craig Davies hit back for the hosts with a brace in time added on.

And Freedman said: "Yes, I'm disappointed with the outcome but I thought we stuck at it, went for the throat and we were very unfortunate not to win the game of football.

"It was a difficult start for us but the lads responded fantastically well. The momentum was with us in the second half, we kept on asking questions of Blackpool's defence and I thought we had two or three opportunities to win the game.

"Credit to the lads for their performance over the 90 minutes. It's not to be but we have shown fantastic spirit and character and bits of quality along this three-month period which shows me there are a lot of positives looking forward.

"We had an ear on the other game and one minute it's not going for you, the next minute it is for you.

"I felt that we set out for the win and we continued doing that until the 90th minute. Along the way there were a lot of bumps and rides but that's football.

"That game taught me something in terms of my players, it taught me what action we've got to take over the summer and there's no doubt we will be taking action.

"I want to be leaving behind this season, leaving behind this game and looking forward to an active summer with the possibility of bringing one or two in and having a good pre-season."

lassic management. Build them up and then knock them back. Raise expectations and then dampen them. Create a dynamic where by you demand the most from your team, but where the team are given room to manoeuvre unexpected or unwanted results. Classy work by Van Gaal, he really reminds me a lot of me. A smart cookie, make no doubt.
