Dougie Freedman: Does not believe Bolton deserve to be bottom of the Championshi

The Trotters were among the favourites for promotion this season but have made a woeful start to the Championship campaign, with no wins and just three points from their opening seven matches.

Millwall's 3-1 win over Blackpool on Tuesday night ensured Wanderers are now at the foot of the standings and while Freedman took positives from a point against the Rams, a result which arrested a run of four straight defeats, he is still irked by their league position.

When it was suggested to Freedman that his side do not deserve to be bottom of the table after their display, he replied: "We certainly don't.

"This is the first time in my management career at Bolton that I'm going to say I am frustrated.

"There's a lot of suggestion there that we've got a good team, we just need to gel them together a little bit and stop losing goals at crucial moments in football matches.

"It's certainly a spirited performance but it's a game we should win."

The beleaguered hosts came out with a point to prove and made it immediately as they took a fifth-minute lead through Alex Baptiste, yet a Johnny Russell double turned the match on its head.

Chris Eagles then levelled proceedings with a 41st-minute strike from 25 yards, which ensured a point for his side.

"(We showed) great spirit (to come back from 2-1 down). That's one thing that we have set in stone - that the reaction of the lads has been fantastic," said Freedman.

"We were very brave players out there as well. You're 2-1 down at home and we're still trying to play the right way.

"There was loads of plusses, it's just you score a couple of goals and where you are right now you think that's going to be enough for you but it doesn't quite work that way.

"We are trying very hard; we're in training double sessions, we're working with the players we've got and we're trying our very best to put it right."

Derby boss Clough was overjoyed with his side's performance, despite missing out on a fourth successive away win, but believes goalkeeper Lee Grant should have done better with Eagles' equaliser.

"I'm delighted with the performance and the manner in which we went about the game," he said.

"It was a setback going one-nil down early on, I thought it gave Bolton a huge lift but the way we came back and the way in which we played was especially pleasing.

"We conceded our second goal when we were at our most comfortable in the game. Granty came in, put his hand up at half-time and said he should have done better with it.

"And that's what's probably cost us the three points instead of the single one."

Derby have earned 10 of their 11 points this season on their travels, prompting speculation over what is the missing ingredient at Pride Park.

"We've played well at home in some of the games, not got the breaks not scored the goals. Away from home we've just got the goals, that's it," Clough added.

"We've scored 12 goals in four games, which is incredible, I think, in four away games.

"We've defended a bit better away from home, we've conceded two tonight but the first one's a good goal and the second one's a goalkeeping error, so apart from that Granty's not had too much to do."
