Nigel Adkins: Mum's words of inspiration

The 48-year-old has made a swift return to management following his surprise

sacking by Southampton to take over from Brian McDermott, whose own dismissal with just eight games left drew criticism.

No club wielding the axe so late in the campaign have saved themselves from the drop but though Reading are seven points from safety, one person is convinced Adkins can mastermind a great escape.

"My mum said to me the other day, 'I have heard something about that (no side avoiding relegation having sacked their manager at this stage), but you know what, it just occurs you seem to be making history at whichever club you have been at,' so maybe this is the next one to do it at," Adkins said.

"We are in the Premier League and we want to remain here. Everyone has worked extremely hard to get in this position.

"We have to be efficient in everything we do to give us a chance to win games."

Adkins, who took Southampton from the foot of League One to the Premier League, had the best win percentage in the club's history but insists he is now fully focused on his new challenge.

"I have had a lot of good meetings with people at the football club, and a good team meeting with the players this morning, so they are well aware of what we are looking for," Adkins added.

"You can see the camaraderie and spirit. There is an inner-belief. We have to galvanise ourselves for an eight-game season now.

"We have implemented a few things on the training ground, it is going to take

a period of time, you can't changes things straight away."

still can't see the Phil Jones thing that some people go on about. Whenever I watch him play it's a repeat of headless chicken meets a gurning Bambi on ice for 90 minutes.

P

robably the first list I've come across in a long time where I agree with a large majority of what was written. Can't agree with everything though, Zaba has had an awful season by his standards, I'd put Monreal (a player who I've never rated) up there, gotta give credit where it's due, he's really stepped up his game.
