Nigel Adkins: Determined to implement a passing style

The new manager wants to establish the Royals as a passing side even as they attempt to bridge a seven-point gap to safety and avoid an immediate return to the Championship.

Saturday marks Adkins' first home game in charge and the visitors are Southampton - the club which sacked him in January after back-to-back promotions.

And ahead of the game, Adkins issued a message to the supporters pleaded for patience among an anxious Madejski Stadium crowd.

He told the club's official website: "I want the players to pass the ball and to do that there needs to be no reprisals if they give the ball away.

"It is a decision-making process to pass it and sometimes the ball will go astray. They've got to know they can do that with the supporters being appreciative of the way they want to go and play and being supportive of them.

"I know we'll get that because everyone - if you're a Reading supporter, you just want Reading Football club to do well. We are Reading Football Club, the football club is about the supporters.

"We all share that same common goal. We want to win games before the end of the season, we want to be in the Premier League."

et again Barcelona try to convince the world that they only play the most virtuous of football. I've never seen a team so willing and able to dish out lumps but feel so self-righteous that no opposition player should ever have the audacity to tackle them.

d love to see a United v Liverpool FA cup final. It would certainly fit the narrative. Obv I'd want the ending to be one of an O.G. and tears as he collects his runner-up medal.
