Nigel Adkins: Praised Reading reaction to being relegated

Adkins took over from Brian McDermott in March and could not stop the Royals being relegated, but he says there are positive signs within the squad that they can mount a serious bid to win the Championship for the second time in three seasons.

"We know what division we are going to be in next season," Adkins said. "We have been pleased with the progression and the mentality of the players has been top drawer.

"It is about winning football matches and we go on the last performance we had and the last result we had was very pleasing, to score four goals away against anybody.

"Fulham is a tough place to go and we played some good football, the morale and spirit amongst the players is good and we have already been looking to the future.

"We have got a strong group of players, many of whom won the Championship last season, so it is course and distance for them.

"There is a hunger and a desire and a drive to get back to the Premier League but we know the challenge of next year's competition but there is already a growing belief amongst everybody here at Reading."

"The important thing is that we have experience of the Championship and the demands of playing Saturday, Tuesday - it is relentless and unforgiving.

"The squad of players have all got to be focused and driven about what we want to do, there is a brand of football we want to play but it has got to be about winning football.

"I think it is important that we have got a young group and some experienced players who have sampled the demands. It is important for the football club to keep building on it."

ah, Fergie is just having another pop at Rooney. He just wants to put him down whenever he gets a chance. Rooney is by far the best English player. Carrick is not far behind, mind. However, by elevating Carrick like that, Sir is having a dig at Wayne. Fergie is well-known for mind games like that. Good to see he's still feisty.
