Jan Vertonghen: Backs Spurs to finish the Premier League season in third spot

The Spurs defender believes Andre Villas-Boas' side must aim to finish as high as possible and try and avoid having to play in the play-off round for a spot in the UEFA Champions League group stage next season.

With just a single point separating third and fourth position, the Belgium international feels Spurs have all the momentum heading into the home straight.

He said: "We will be happy with fourth place but we're only one point behind Chelsea, so we have to aim as high as possible.

"We have a home game against Newcastle on Saturday, so why not? I've played against all the biggest teams in the League and we can beat anybody."

Meanwhile, Vertonghen, 25, claims Gareth Bale should be mentioned in the same breath as Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi as a 'world-class player' after some of his matchwinning performances this season.

"After Ronaldo and Messi, you have a lot of players who are very close to each other and Gareth Bale is one of those.

"He is a world-class player and he could play for any team in the world."

was there, it was embarrassing - the team looked totally unbalanced from the off, the defence was woeful and when Mikel came off injured it got even worse with nobody in front of them. Up front on several occasions we had opportunities and nobody would shoot - it was a complete farse! On the back of Salah's performance I'm glad there is talk of getting shot...

reat to see Tommy Rosicky getting some love. A wonderful player. Such a pity we lost so long to injury. I was so excited when we signed him, this resurgence only makes the absences seem more of a lost opportunity.
