Defoe was the star of the show as Spurs hit the Hong Kong outfit for six in the third place play-off at the Barclays Asia Trophy and was delighted to be amongst the goals.

"As a forward, to get your goals before the season starts is crucial," Defoe told Sky Sports.

"It gives you confidence ahead of the season and I'm delighted.

"I feel really fit to be honest. I think it was important for me to get 90 minutes today.

"The boys have worked really hard. We've done double sessions every day and we've enjoyed it. It was a good win."

Spurs have been linked with a number of forwards so far this summer with Valencia's Roberto Soldado the latest man to emerge as a target for the White Hart Lane club.

But Defoe insists he is unconcerned by the speculation as he accepts battling for his place is part of life at a major club.

"There is always going to be competition," added the 30-year-old England international. "When you play for a top club, you're going to attract top players. It's part and parcel of football.

"It's important that when you play you concentrate on keeping the shirt and it's as simple as that. I'll keep working hard and I feel stronger than ever. I'll take it from here and see what happens."

S I've always envisioned him as a Pirlo or a Scholes, though he needs some of Andy Murray's conditioning and shiny, ankle supports to keep his own from buckling under the tackles that will (inevitably) come his way. He's got the physique and low centre of gravity to flourish, but needs to make himself more resilient.

s a United fan I fell I can say this without accusation of bias, Sergio Aguero is for me the only player close to Ronaldo or Messi, what goes against him is his injury record, Hazard is good in fits but doesn't give enough end product in my eyes, Tevez would be 4th for me
