Andre Villas-Boas: Feels side did well in difficult conditions

Jermain Defoe scored a hat-trick as Spurs bounced back from the disappointment of defeat to Sunderland in midweek to beat the local Hong Kong outfit in the Asia Trophy third place play-off.

Villas-Boas had suggested he would prefer the game not to go ahead given the poor condition of the pitch but was happy to pick the positives after a strong showing.

"It was very good," he told Sky Sports. "We continue our hard work after the Sunderland defeat and didn't stop for a rest.

"We really trained hard in double sessions and today we did really well. Not only with the football that we played but physically we did well on a difficult pitch so there were a lot of positives."

Villas-Boas again refused to answer questions about Gareth Bale's future in the wake of a report in Spain claiming Bale has told Spurs he wants to go to Real Madrid.

But he was more than happy to talk about Defoe, saying: "He's a deadly striker in the box. And today, not only with his hat-trick but also with his assisting, he showed how unselfish he is also in front of goal.

"It's good for the team - co-operation, teamwork and ethics - and a great result."

With the start of the Premier League season now just three weeks away, the Portuguese coach is encouraged by the fitness levels of his squad and is hoping they'll be ready for the big kick-off.

Villas-Boas said: "I think we are physically well as we've worked hard on our stamina - letting a lot of players do the 90 minutes. So I think we are just about there physically.

"In terms of football, we did well here in difficult conditions. We had some good moments and just need to look to improve as we have a difficult game against Monaco coming up.

"We will continue our hard work and hopefully as we get closer to the season we can get the players fresh."

haos reached its ultimate reckoning last weekend with Tony Hibbert looking assured at left back and Osman looking like a cultured ball playing midfielder before busting a gut to get to the back post for a Samuel Eto'o ball. Different chaos but chaos. If Kone scores the winner tonight I fear the world will end.
