Defoe netted twice before summer signing Christian Eriksen came off the bench to cap a 3-0 win in the north London club's opening Group K fixture.

The England striker scored in the 21st and 29th minute to take his European tally to just two short of Martin Chivers club record of 22.

"It's great, he's a legend, to be up there with someone like that is great," said Defoe, who is hoping to force his way into Andre Villas-Boas' strong-looking squad.

"When you get an opportunity you've got to take it - it's as simple as that," he added. "The performance was good tonight - we've won the game quite comfortably.

"It's a case of working hard for the team, to win the game. There's a good spirit there and the new lads have been brilliant."

Villas-Boas was generous in his praise for Defoe and his new team-mates after the game.

"What he's capable of we know - I think his record speaks for itself," the Tottenham manager said of Defoe.

"He's been keeping himself sharp and fit and he's been excellent tonight once again on his movements, on his diagonals, two great assists from Lewis (Holtby), and (Erik) Lamela but great movement also.

"I'm very pleased in general for the boys' performance."

Christian Eriksen's goal was his first since the Dane's arrival from Ajax and he told ITV4: "It was a really nice goal, I'm really happy about it."

irst Townsend, now Chiles. What next ITV? Comedy that you can actually watch without vomiting up your own spleen? I'll be sad to see Matt Smith go though. I actually quite like him. Plus, he was good in Doctor Who.

wful, awful pundit. He was crap on BBC, and offered a little more analysis than Robbie Savage - apart from the delivery of banality in a sexy accent. Also, as I'm Irish he'll never be more then a slimy, hand-balling f**ker in my eyes.
